Screw in Fuse electrical systems

A screw in fuse is a type of electrical overcurrent protection device. The installation of this product was phased out in the 1960s as the technology evolved into the use of breakers. If observed, this indicates specifically that the system is old, and unless properly maintained, it could be problematic. Additionally, these systems often fail and there is the possibility to replace a fuse with the improper size. If this occurs, it creates the opportunity for a significant fire hazard. Having an electrical panel with screw in fuses, is also an indication of an older two wire system (as discussed in wiring sections).

Fuses present: This style of electrical system is dated and may not be sufficient to meet the electrical demands of a modern house. Recommend updating the service panel to circuit breakers.

Incorrect fuse size noted: There are fuses that are oversized for the wire it supplies. Recommend further evaluation and repair.
